As you may know, Google updates your website’s PageRank on a quarterly basis, and the last update started yesterday.

The previous public PR update was on January 1st 2010, a month before WebTechWise was launched. Therefore, this blog showed a PR of zero for the first two month of its existence, until yesterday, when it was updated to 4 (which I’m really excited about!).

SEO experts differentiate between two types of PageRank:

  • Public PR – updates every three month (more or less), and can be detected by Google Toolbar or Quirk SearchStatus add-on for Firefox (that displays Alexa Rank and Compete Rank as well).
  • Real PR – updates much more frequently, in order to improve the relevancy of Google search results. However, the real PR is only known to Google, and is not revealed until the next public PR.

Some online tools predict your future public PR, by detecting back links to your site or by retrieving the real PR from several Google data centers, however, these tools should not be considered as accurate:

One of the main factors in PR calculation is the the quality and quantity of your site’s back links. The more incoming links you have from high PR websites, the better, so you can:

  1. Join blogging communities and social networks.
  2. Take part in discussion forums in your niche.
  3. Guest post and comment in fellow blogs (some blogs also use do-follow).
  4. Submit your blog to directories (such as Technorati).
  5. Promote your blog in YouTube.

You can also check your current back link status by online tools such as this.

However, after doing all the above, it might not be enough to increase Google PageRank without taking care of some core factors like On Page SEO, making sure you only use legitimate white hat SEO in your site, and of course publishing new quality content frequently.

Do you use other PageRank detection tools? What do you do to improve your PageRank? don’t be a square, share.
